A Few Thoughts About Pinchas
A. DISCIPLINE
Perhaps Pinchas being given a role as a kohen was a matter of discipline. He killed two people (pretty violently), and not that it was absolutely wrong, but perhaps there might have been different or perhaps even more peaceful ways to go about dealing with people. Thus Hashem gave him the opportunity in the future to have a perspective of ohev shalom ve'rodeph shalom. Being given the title of Kohen may not necessarily have been a reward but rather an opportunity for self-discipline and introspection for all his decisions.
B. Merit of women.
Just like women did not participate in the egel hazahav or did not say anything negative about the land of Israel with the spies... Nobody in the Torah asked for an inheritance in the land of Israel except for Tzelaphchad's daughters. What a zechut.
B. Roles are BS'D.
* Moshe did not want the role of redeemer, but God bestowed it upon him.
* Korach demanded a different role and God was not happy about the way he went about this, and God removed him from the world.
* Pinchas was not consulted about God bestowing the role of Kohen on him, but accepted it.
* Tzelaphchad's daughters felt that they were not given due status amongst Israel and respectfully requested Moshe & God for an inheritance, which God considered and bestowed upon them.
You know I can help my child in their growth with conduct, behaviour and middot, but I can't help them with their role in life. That only comes from them, and what God has intended for them. And if they want to do something different with their life then they should chat with their mentor and most importantly also have a chat with the Almighty about it. Bez'H God will bestow upon them the appropriate chesed to put them on the right path.
